An increase in the number of diseases, caused by stress situations, nervous overstrain, wide range of various negative factors, predetermined by a complicated social economic situation in the country, a rise in the amount of anthropogenic catastrophes resulted in a wider administration of psychotropic medication, in particular, tranquilizers and nootropics. However, its therapeutic modality can be limited by sedative and psychogogic effects and also be accompanied by the development of side effects. Benzodiazepine tranquilizers cause inhibition of cognitive functions and motivations, whereas nootropics increase affective, psychopathy-like and anxious disorders. Moreover, these drugs in therapeutic dosage can cause a range of unfavorable side effects in somatoneurologic field, which does not fully meet the requirements of contemporary psychopharmacotherapy in relation to the safety of applied medicinal products. That is why agents of wide clinical and therapeutic range have been more frequently administered recently, as they have a simultaneous positive effect on various components of asthenic symptom complex without aggravating the patients’ condition. The employment of agents which combine the advantages of tranquilizers and nootropics is considered to be a promising direction. Of special concern is the possibility to use medicinal products of the new generation (“tranquilonootropics” or “nootranquilizers”), which a wide range of psychopharmacotherapeutic potency, including not only the direct activating effect on cognitive functions (education, memory, mental activity) but also anxiolytic, antiasthenic, psychic energizing and other effects. Such tranquilonootropics (atypical tranquilizers with nosotropic range of activity) as phenibut and mebicarum correspond to current requirements applicable to psychotropic agents. They are notable for well-balanced therapeutic effect with minimal side effects.
