ABSTRACT VS. ANNOTATION: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

The article analyzes the structural and semantic features of English- and Russian-language abstracts. The main components of the article are as follows: the characteristics of the research topic, research issues, purposes, results, and novelty. The article begins with the analysis of the definitions of the term “abstract” and its communicative functions. The authors give examples of abstracts, analyze their structural components and tips how to write them. Among the components of the abstract one can mention motivation, problem statement, approach, results, and conclusions. The paper also contains a number of clichés recommended to use in abstracts. The article concludes that when writing abstracts one should take into account lexical, grammatical, pragmatic and stylistic requirements set in the academic community.
