Chinese Cosmos is a living organism, which is integrated into a dynamic system. The basic principle of world’s existence and development is eternal change. The core of the universe is neither matter nor consciousness, but life energy called Qi (Ki, Chi). Everything that exists in the world is Qi and its states. Qi is the dynamic force, it is not the substance of Modern Western European philosophy, but a grand vital force that permeates the whole Cosmos, in fact, it is Cosmos itself. Ancient Chinese ontology is ontology of processes rather than things, since every thing is a process. Thus, there is no insurmountable boundary between matter and spirit, they are different modes of one unified Qi. Ancient Chinese thinkers understood existence as a continuous process of Qi transformations. The source of these transformations is complementary forces’ movement. This article aims to analyze one of the fundamental concepts of Chinese philosophical and cultural thought - the concept of “Qi”.
